You've probably heard of them: single and progressive lenses. But what exactly is the difference? In this article we would like to explain to you the differences between these types of lenses so that you know which type of lens suits your eye strength.

Single glasses

Single lens glasses are glasses for better near vision or for better far vision. Single vision glasses for near vision have a plus sign in the lenses. This allows you to see sharply up close, for example to read a book. Single vision glasses for distance have a minus power in the lenses. This allows you to see sharply in the distance, for example while driving a car.

Thus, the lens of single lenses has only one strength (either minus or plus).

Single and multifocal

Multifocal lenses

Multifocal glasses let you see well both up close and from afar. Multifocal lenses combine different strengths in one lens. Depending on where in your lens you look, this allows you to see well at different distances: reading distance, intermediate distance and distant, without having to change glasses. Multifocal lenses (also called varifocal lenses) therefore allow you to see sharply both near and far.

Age

After age 40, chances are you will have to deal with two strengths in one eye. If you need correction for both near and far, then progressive glasses may be the solution.

Expert advice

A good optician will ensure a natural transition from plus to minus strength so you can see comfortably.
